CARTOONS! And race....

Watch these cartoons!

Now, think about the ways that each race is portrayed in each cartoon. Do these cartoons rely on racial stereotypes to create a plotline, humor, or a point? Is this done in a way that is offensive or inoffensive? Why? What do you think about the cartoon's handing of race? Does it confirm ideas/stereotypes you already have of the mannerisms, behavior, or culture of certain races? I am not asking you if you think that either show is an ACCURATE portrayal of anything. I am asking you to look at HOW race is portrayed in each show. If King of the Hill was your only window into "whiteness" and The Boondocks was your only window into "blackness", what would you think of each of these two races? Post a well-written, well-constructed paragraph as a comment below. DUE FRIDAY BY NOON. Your paper assignment will be posted here TOMORROW BY NOON.

  1. On the Boondocks, it showed that black people is very ignorant and violent. Its very offensive to my race to put us in that matter. On the King of the Hill,it seem that white people are country and military people. It shows that every white person has a military veteran in their family.

  3. Watching "King of the Hill" make you think all whites sit around with thier friends and drinks beer. It als protrays that all whites are country and has some type of military related to them. The "Boondocks" protrays that all black are ghetto and ignorant to life. It make it look like blacks have no morals or care abou aything but their selves. I would say but of these cartoons are offensive too both races.

  4. Watching the "Boondocks" would give you a stereotype about blacks that seem very disrespectful and rude. It also makes us seem crazy and rowdy but to me its all to make a laugh even though it stills gives you a bad look of the race. "King of the Hill" gives you the idea that all white people just stand around drinking all day. Shows a lil stupidity also which I think is just for comedy. Both are crazy cartoons and show offensive stereotypes of each race.

  5. After watching King of the Hill I thought it was to create a point because no black person in their right mind is going to let a twelve year hold handle a gun in any form. The Boondocks on the other hand I think was a point too. The neighborhood the rapper moved in was a wealthy neighborhood and the rapper should have took heed to his neighbors. I was suprised the white people allow their children to listen to his music and the "Granddad" was not a fan.

  6. After watching King of the Hill i thought that at first the man didn't want to spend time with his son until he found out that he was good at something. In watching the Boondocks i thought it gave black people a bad look on how if they have money how they just spend on unnecessary things, they use bad language and drugs.

  7. Watching "King of the Hill" would pass off the impression that all white people drink beer and stand around talking with their friends. Also it passes them off as they are country or as worded in American society "Red-necks" because of their lifestyles and militia background. Watching "Boondocks" passes off the stereotype that all black people are ignorant and have no self-respect or respect for others. It would also pass off that black people would spend all their money, if they had any, on unnecessary items along with the usage of profane language.

  8. If The Boondocks was my only outlook on the african american race, I would think that everyone was ignorant and didnt caare about anything that they did or said. If King of the Hill was my only outlook on white people I would think that all white people were red necks. I would also think that all white people are supposed to be in the army. Both of these cartoons are horrible perceptions these races. And to think that this is what the children watch on television.

  9. I feel both boondocks and king of the hill is both cartoons that do stereotyping for humor. But The boondocks way of stereotyping is offensive in ways because they use bad languages and bad ways of handling things but it can be funny. King of the hill is a little better because they are not fighting among people and not being prejudice.
