As we discussed in class, it can sometimes be difficult to parse out the differences between racism and racial stereotyping. Here are the Wikipedia definitions of each:
Racism
Stereotyping
Read the Wikipedia entries, think about what we discussed in class, and as a comment below write one paragraph discussing what you think the difference is between racism and racial stereotyping.

  1. Racism and Racial Sterotyping is different to me. Racism is dealing with the old times when people believe that different races should not be allow to do this or enter here, and have the right to sit here. Where as Racial Sterotyping has to do with people's opinion on how the feeling about a person that a real fact. It is more like take a judgement by the way things look.

  2. To me racism is where certain ethnic groups feud over certain things, for example the whites did not want to attend school with color people because color people were slaves but some people were raised to think that way. Racism still exist today but should be put to an end. Stereotype is a persons opinion on another race, example white people may think that all black men are murders which is not true, however black people are the majority that are in jail. People are entitled to their own opinion but that does not mean they are right.

  3. Racial stereotyping is a generalized belief about certain people that causes you to react to situations or people because of a previous expereience with that group of people. Racism is beleiveing that one race is less than or inferior because of the color of their skin or their heritage. Racism is different than stereotyping because a judgement is being made without prior knowlede of a group or culture. some people may argue that racial stereotyping and racism is the same, because stereotypes also lead to discrimination and unfavorable treatment. We all come to a conclusion about someone when we first meet them, but once we get to know them that opinion either changes or stays the same. We are not all racists but we are guility of stereotyping.

  4. In my opinion racism differs from stereotyping in several different ways. Racism is the dislike of a person just because of his/her ethnicity, gender, religion and more. Stereotyping on the other hand is the judgement of a person or group of persons just because of how they are portrayed whether in the media or real life. Just because a person stereotypes someone doesn't mean that they are a racist person. It just means that their opinion on a specific group of people is all they know. Instead of stereotyping a person just because of what we think we know, we should take the time out to get to know the individual because most of the time we would be terribly wrong if we judged a person off of what we thought we knew about them. Although no one likes to be accused of being a racist, everyone can admit that they have been guilty of stereotyping at least once in their lifetime.

  5. Racism and racial stereotyping is indeed differnt. My definition of racism is the hatred of another race. My definition of racial stereotyping is a general assumption of another race from social experiences. They both are learned from society. I think everyone stereotype other races on a daily basis but not everyone is racist.

  6. A I ask some of my peers they believe racism is still alive because its something that you learn when you are younger and plus people still hold grudges on the past. Racism: A belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

  7. Racism and Racial stereotyping are completely different to me because if someone is racist to a different race that means they HATE them and dont want nothing to do with them. Racial stereotyping is way different because if black people think all asians are smart thats just an opinion and noone hates them. Stereotyping can be good or bad but if your racist to a different race its bad and no good.

  8. Racism to me is the putting down or looking down upon a certain race or ethnicity for the fact that one thinks of himself as superior to the other. Racial Stereotyping is when one puts a group or ethnicity into a certain category to say that a majority or all of that group either can or can not do a certain task specified.

  9. Racism to me is a strong disgust for one’s race or culture. It has been an ongoing Universal “plague” that ceases to come to an end. It has corrupted the minds set of society as a whole since ancient times. Even to this day there is still a lot of undercover racism and discrimination going on ranging from the political stand point, the social order of the world. Racial Stereotyping to me is not so much hatred but an inconclusive opinion for example “All blacks are better at basketball then all whites.” Is this a verifiable fact? No it is not it is an assumption based off of more success blacks have in the particular sports; this doesn’t necessarily mean that that’s true. In Conclusion it’s wrong to use both Racial Stereotyping and Racism but their differences vary

  10. Racism is when someone thinks that one race is superior to another. I also think when a race or someone downgrades a another race. Stereotyping are assuming the because you are one race that you do a certain thing or act a certain way. The two racism and stereotyping are very similar but at the same time they're different.

  11. To me racism is when he/she sees his/her race as superiority, and does not associate with another race.Stereotyping is just going by what you see from a particular race, which may be broadcasted by the media or just one person cutting up. The difference is that racism is overall bad,but stereotyping can have a good side to it. Stereotyping can be used to be funny, but racism cant..

  12. Racism is against more than just one race. Its when someone would perfer to be around only people who look just like then. Stereotyping is different sayings against alot of different people. Stereotyping can be used to make a joke but racism is a more serious form.
